A 22-year-old man arrested in connection with false reports of an active shooter at a shopping mall on Friday night faces assault charges, records show.
Rayvon Alexander Berton was jailed at the Clark County Detention Center on Saturday, where he is being held without bail. He faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon and an additional firearm charge which bears an allegation of carrying a concealed weapon without a license, jail records show.
The false reports of an active shooter in Town Square Las Vegas, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South, caused a strong police response at the mall and confusion among many customers.
Police said the situation unfolded after witnesses saw two groups of young men and teenagers enter the Gameworks store to fight. A handgun was drawn during the fight, but no shots were fired. The weapon was later found on the ground at the scene.
Officers evacuated the area and advised people to take shelter in nearby businesses while they conducted interviews and gathered information. Several people were arrested at the scene, police said.
Berton’s arrest report had not been released Monday morning.
On May 17, the Metropolitan Police Department also responded to an alert from active shooters at Boulevard Mall, near Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn Road, for reports of a masked man carrying a long gun. . Police evacuated the mall but later determined that no shots were fired.
