COVID Las Vegas hotel closures: Mirage, Still temporarily

Las Vegas hotels have reopened in phases since the gaming mecca started welcoming tourists again in June, but visitors planning a trip in early 2021 could find some of their favorites partially closed, as trips in case of pandemic remain slow.

The Mirage, which bills itself as the original mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip, announced this week that it will only accept bookings for Thursday-Sunday stays starting Jan. 4.

And unlike a midweek hotel closure that took effect after Thanksgiving, this closure will encompass the entire place. The casino, restaurants, spa and the iconic attraction of the Mirage volcano will be closed from Monday noon to Thursday noon until February.

The hotel cited low levels of weekday activity given the COVID-19 pandemic and Nevada’s restrictions on group gatherings.

“While we do not currently expect the midweek closure to remain in effect after February, we will continue to assess how long the Mirage’s midweek hotel closure will remain in effect,” said Callie Driehorst , spokesperson for Mirage’s parent, MGM Resorts, said in a report.

When the Mirage announced the midweek closure of hotels at the end of November, officials said they didn’t expect him to stay after December, but would monitor activity levels to see how much long it would remain in effect. Travelers who have booked will be able to cancel or move to a partner hotel.

In October, the latest month for which figures are available, the mid-week occupancy rate at hotels and resorts in Las Vegas was 38.6%, up from 87.1% in October 2019, according to Las Vegas. Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. The weekend occupancy rate was 64.2% compared to 98% in October 2019. The number of visitors to Las Vegas in October increased 9% from September to 1.85 million, but remains low. decrease of almost 50% compared to the previous year.

The Mirage isn’t the only one to close a few days a week or more, whether it’s hotel rooms only or all operations.

Encore at Wynn Las Vegas is closed Monday at noon until early Thursday afternoon since October 19, a closure that includes the hotel, casino and restaurants. Parent Las Vegas Sands said the schedule will continue indefinitely. The sister resort Wynn Las Vegas, next door to Encore, remains open daily.

And the Palazzo, a sister resort of the Venetian, recently extended its hotel closures only from midweek to daily for most of December.
